Committee Approves 4% Pay Raise For Some Alabama Teachers

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) – A Senate committee has approved a 4 percent pay raise for most public school teachers, administrators and employees.

The Senate Finance and Taxation Education Trust Fund Committee approved the raise Tuesday.

The bill now moves to the full Alabama Senate. Under the proposal, teachers and school employees making less than $75,000 annually would get a 4 percent raise.

Employees making more than that would get a 2 percent raise.

This will be the first take-home pay increase in several years for public school teachers.

The committee went along with a suggestion by Committee Chairman Arthur Orr to also give all principals and assistant a 4 percent raise regardless of current pay.

Orr said good principals are the “backbone” of schools.
