COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) -After a series of unflattering headlines directed at the Columbus School Board, it seems like things are beginning to fall back into place.

Edna McGill became interim Columbus schools superintendent 3 weeks ago. She says her district will be ready when classes resume in just a few weeks.

“We’re very well prepared for the year. Our teachers return on August the 5th, many of them have already been back in the classroom getting the rooms prepared,” said Edna McGill.

Teachers have already completed their Summer training programs, and parents are encouraged to register their children as soon as possible. A new transportation system is also in the works.

“We have a new transportation system that will be in process this year. We’re expecting a very smooth transition with that, most of the drivers will be the same as they were last year so we expect that to go very well,” added McGill.

McGill says they’re nearing the end of the budget process. She hopes it will be completed soon. But what many want to know is, does McGill want to become the Superintendent on a more permanent basis?

“We’ll be moving through that process as we see fit and I do not have plans at this time to apply for the permanent position but as we move through that process we’ll be making sure that we have the best interest of the children at heart,” said McGill.

And as far as children are concerned, we’re told test scores are being evaluated and a plan is being made for any needed improvements.

“We are where we feel like we need to be and we’re so excited, can’t wait to get the children back and get started with a wonderful new year,” added McGill.

Classes start August 7th for students. For more information on where you can register for classes you can visit http://www.columbuscityschools.org
