Columbus restaurant tax signed by Gov. Bryant

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Governor Phil Bryant has signed the two percent Columbus restaurant tax.

The legislation impacts eateries with gross sales above $100,000 dollars annually.

$400,000 would go to Columbus to use in its parks department. $300,000 is set for the newly formed Lowndes County Parks and Rec, while a quarter million goes to the Golden Triangle Development Link.

The rest of the money raised would go to the Columbus Lowndes Convention and Visitors Bureau.

One thing that could block the tax is a citizens referendum.

If 20 percent or 2000 registered Columbus voters sign a petition, the tax would have to be approved in an election.
