COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — One man is fighting for his life in a Jackson hospital and another is behind bars following an early Saturday morning shooting and beating in Columbus.

Police 45-year-old Dino Fitzgerald Turner is charged with aggravated assault in connection with the attack at 201 Byrnes Circle at about 2:30 a.m. Saturday.

He initially fled the scene but turned himself in at the Lowndes County Jail at about 10:30 a.m. He was taken to Baptist Golden Triangle hospital for treatment of what says is a gunshot wound.

Investigators say Turner waited inside the house where his estranged wife lives and attacked a man she was with when they entered the residence. Turner allegedly shot the man in the upper left chest and shoulder with a shotgun at almost point-blank range and then beat him with either brass knuckles or a pipe.

Police say the estranged wife jumped Turner to try to stop the attack and then hid in a bathroom before Turner fled on foot and she was able to call police.

“He just walked right by her and didn’t say anything,” one investigator said of Truner.

The woman has an order of protection against Turner, who has a prior record of arrests.

Turner is described as about 5-feet, 7-inches tall, weighing about 210 pounds.

The victim, whose name is not being released by police, was airlifted to University Medical Center in Jackson.
