Columbus Native Leslie Frazier Named to Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2017
JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) — An area legend will see his name enshrined in the state he calls home.
Leslie Frazier, a native of Columbus, Mississippi and a graduate of Lee High School back in the late 1970’s, will join five others in the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2017. The induction will take place in August of 2017.
Frazier got his start on the football field with the Lee High Generals back in the late 70’s and eventually worked his way up to play collegiately for the Alcorn State Braves.
After graduating from Alcorn State in 1981, Frazier went un-selected in the 1981 NFL Draft. He eventually signed with the Chicago Bears, where he would play for five seasons.
Frazier played for legendary head coach Mike Ditka and was an instrumental piece of the 1985 Chicago Bears defense that led the team to Super Bowl XX championship. Frazier went on to lead the Bears in interceptions with six during the 1985 season.
After joining the football coaching fraternity in 1988, Frazier soared up the coaching ranks and became head coach of the Minnesota Vikings for three seasons from 2011-2013. His 2012 team finished 10-6 and made the playoffs.
Currently, Frazier is the secondary coach for the Baltimore Ravens.
Leslie Frazier joins Bob Braddy, Rick Cleveland, Eugenia Conner, Marcus Dupree and Jay Powell as the Class of 2017 that will be inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in early August 2017.
