COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)- After 2 decades of hard work, the Columbus-Lowndes Humane Society finally has a new home.
“We just currently moved into the new facility located at 50 Airline road. We’re really happy and encouraged with this new shelter. We have been raising money for about 20 years getting donations and sponsors and everything to help build this new facility. So it’s a long time coming and we really appreciate of all the donations.” said Director Karen Johnwick.
The new shelter cost one million dollars to build with every nickle coming from the community. It can hold between 80 to 100 animals, that’s double the amount they could hold before.
We have a cat adoption area, we have a dog adoption area, we have a large office area now if schools want to come and visit. We can house more cats and dogs at this facility,” said Johnwick.
The facility is also equipped with new indoor/outdoor cages, allowing the dogs to get fresh air if they choose. Organizers say they’re thankful to everyone who made this possible.
“Generous supporters have paid majority of this facility off but we still owe a little balance so we’re hoping to be able to pay this off within the next year,” said Johnwick.
There will be a grand opening Tuesday, October 29th from 5:30 pm to pm. Leaders are asking everyone, especially those who donated and supported them over the years to come out.
