COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – About 24 hours after Columbus’ first homicide, a suspect was taken into custody on the same street where the shooting reportedly occurred.
Interim Columbus Police Chief Captain Fred Shelton tells WCBI, Leronn Klayshay Gregory, 24, was arrested about 1:30 PM on Monday. He is being charged with murder and his bond is set at one million dollars.
Investigators say Brandon Michael Gordon, 25, of Columbus was found shot behind a home on Beech Street, in east Columbus, on Sunday afternoon.
Shelton says police believe Gordon was shot on Florence Street and then ran behind the home.
Gordon called 911 after being shot. Officers tried using Gordon’s cell phone signal to help find him.
Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant says Gordon was taken to Baptist Golden Triangle hospital, where he died.
Shelton says detectives are still trying to determine what sparked the shooting.
An autopsy is expected to be performed on Tuesday.
U.S. Marshal’s and Lowndes County deputies assisted in Gregory’s arrest.
The motive is still under investigation and the weapon has not been found.
Leronn Gregory has not posted bail and is being held at the Lowndes County Jail.
