Columbus city council to vote on restaurant tax

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – If lawmakers approve a 2% restaurant tax this legislative session, the Columbus Convention and Visitors Bureau knows how it wants to spend some of the money.

The CVB board and the Lowndes County board of supervisors have approved a resolution that would give four events held in the city limits $15,000 a piece. That includes Juneteenth and Market Street.

Meanwhile, the county would receive $30,000 for festivals or events that supervisors vote to fund.

Those events wold be held in the county.

The Columbus city council will vote on the measure Tuesday night.

Of course, this is all contingent on state lawmakers passing a 2% restaurant tax. The measure was not brought up for a vote this past legislative session, due to conflicts between the city and county on where the money would be spent.
