Clerks Issuing Same-Sex Marriage Licenses in Mississippi
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Same-sex couples are again getting marriage licenses in Mississippi.
That news came Monday after state Attorney General Jim Hood sent a letter to county circuit clerks indicating they could go ahead and issue licenses.
At least two same-sex couples were married before noon at the Hinds County Courthouse in Jackson. Laurin Locke and Tiffany Brosh of Pearl were the first to wed Monday. They proudly displayed their official marriage license to reporters.
On Friday, Hood had urged clerks to refrain from issuing licenses until a federal appeals court took action to lift an earlier block on same-sex marriages. Hood changed that advice Monday, despite a lack of action, so far, at the appeals court.
Before Hood issued that advice Friday, three couples were married in Forrest County.
