CLAY COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — Two people are dead after a blaze broke out late Thursday night at their Clay County home.
A Friday rain could be seen falling on what’s left of a home on Dr. Sears Road in Clay County, which was destroyed by a fire.
Four people were in the house when a call came in to 911 just after 11 p.m. Thursday.
“I was asleep, actually I had just dozed off and went to sleep. And a neighbor came and knocked on the door. And she said, you know get up the house is on fire. And so we got up got dressed and ran outside. And by the time we ran outside the house was already in flames,” said Tammy Pointer, victim’s relative.
54-year-old Alvin Tallie and his wife Fetenia did not make it out alive.
Clay County Coroner Alvin Carter believes they died of smoke inhalation, and an autopsy is expected to confirm that.
“When our deputies arrived on the scene they stated that basically the structure appeared to be almost on the ground. At this time the report was that two people were trapped inside, and that later was confirmed to be true,” said Sheriff Eddie Scott, Clay County.
“There wasn’t any noise. Some of my other cousins, they were at the window trying everything they could do to get in but they couldn’t get in,” said Pointer.
Another adult and child also in the house apparently escaped through a rear bathroom window. That male adult was being treated for a cut and smoke inhalation at Clay County Medical Center and could be transported to a Tupelo hospital.
“Our heart goes out to the families in this. Actually this is the family of one of my staff members that work here. So again our thoughts and prayers are with the family,” said Scott.
“It was surreal, it was like your worst nightmare unfolding before your eyes,” said Pointer.
The Clay County coroner, sheriff’s department, and state fire marshals are investigating the blaze.
