Choctaw County School Board Approves High School Nickname and Colors
CHOCTAW COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — The consolidation has been approved and the new school was in need of a paint job and a nickname.
The nickname ‘Chargers’ was approved by the Choctaw County School Board in a board meeting this week. Red, white, and navy blue were the school colors that were also approved in the same meeting.
Choctaw County High School, which will be the consolidation of Ackerman High School and Weir Attendance Center, will begin competing in athletics during the upcoming school year (2013-14). French Camp Academy will retain its high school and athletics.
CCHS has an attendance that would classify itself as a Class 3A school under the new Mississippi High School Athletics Association reclassification. But the consolidation was not approved before the reclassification, which means the new high school may be able to compete in the position of the former Ackerman High School in Class 2A. The MHSAA will make an official decision by the end of June.
The Choctaw School consolidation was approved on April 11, 2013. Ackerman High will house the 7th-12th graders from Ackerman and Weir while leaving grades K through 6 at schools in Ackerman, Weir, and French Camp.
The U.S. Justice Department had proposed consolidating grades 9-12 at Ackerman while creating a middle school and elementary school at Weir and a Pre-K through second grade at French Camp, but Judge Glenn Davidson’s ruling closely followed the school district’s consolidation plan.
