ABERDEEN, Miss. (WCBI) – When it feels this hot for an extended period of time, many churches, volunteers and law enforcement agencies take the extra time to make sure some of their most vulnerable neighbors are safe.
For more than three years, deputies have built a relationship designed with safety and community in mind.
Every day Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies check in with older residents who are confined to their homes.
“Since the heat advisory is out and Monroe County is in it, we want to make sure that they understand that and that it is a dangerous period of time,” Sheriff Cecil Cantrell said.
That’s why deputies want to make sure the people on their list are staying cool and being cautious when going outdoors. One resident who is on the list said know your limits is just as important.
“Really and old person like me, they don’t need to be out,” Monroe County resident Pat Mays said.
“If they have to go out let someone know where they’re going. If they’re going to be outside in the yard, then have someone check on them every hour or so,” Cantrell said.
Cantrell gave two tips for the elderly safe during humid weather: stay hydrated and avoid being in the sun too long.
