LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — Some local kids from ages six to sixteen are getting to have fun this week in Lowndes County. Some of them kids attending the camp got diagnosed with cancer at a young age, but as WCBI’s Jonathan Flippo tells us there’s a little bit of having fun at Camp Rising Sun with other kids.
The arrows are flying. It’s a bulls-eye for campers this week at Camp Rising Sun.
This week’s target: fun. It may sound easy, but for the more than forty kids here at Camp Rising Sun, this is one week that fun is all that matters.
Some of these kids were diagnosed with cancer at a young age. Others are in remission, but none of that matters here.
Olive Branch native and Camper Ellen Taylor says it’s fun being around with kids at camp.
“It’s fun because there is always like somebody there helping you and like you always have something to do and your never really bored,” said Camper Ellen Taylor.
“You get to see how they deal with things and how happy they are and how care free they get to be out here they don’t have to go back to the real world yet and yeah letting kids be kids,” said Camp Counselor Dana Delk.
Camp Director Allison Kizer says that this camp is focused on the campers.
“The great thing about Camp Rising Sun is that it’s a camp for everybody. There’s nobody that feels like there’s anything different. It’s just a traditional summer camp I mean the focus is not on the fact they’ve been sick or are sick. The focus is on just having a normal summer camp experience without anybody asking a bunch of questions,” said Camp Director Allison Kizer.
And for these campers, that’s the perfect vacation.
The kids will continue into camp until Saturday.
