CALHOUN COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI)-It can be a physical and financial stress for cancer patients taking radiation and chemo treatments. That’s why Calhoun Cares is hosting a fall festival to benefit local patients.
Fresh produce, hand made crafts, and homemade jams. It’s the makings of a great festival, but one thing is different. All 22 vendors will be donating a portion of their proceeds to Calhoun Cares.
It’s an organization that helps cancer patients financially by helping with bills and even gas vouchers.
“It’s such a financial strain. The cancer itself and then be able to not worry about how I’m going to get gas money and get back and forth to my treatment,” says Eddie Barnes.
Leah McCormick knows all too well what cancer treatments are like. That’s why she opened Fabric of Hope to help other liker her find comfort.
“I saw first hand the cost. I had problems when I was going through chemo finding hats that were affordable and then I couldn’t really find anything that was cute or unique so I just want other chemo patients to feel special,” says Leah McCormick.
Through events like these. McCormick says the community has impacted many lives.
“Calhoun County is such a giving county. Calhoun Cares is such a wonderful organization started by a wonderful women that was a friend of mine. So it’s an honor to be part of this,” says McCormick.
Calhoun Cares was started by Priscilla Milton who lost her fight to cancer… but one family member says her legacy is living on.
“She would be so excited. I know she’s smiling down, it makes me want to tear up, but I know she is smiling down and she is so happy that we’re still doing this and helping so many people our friends and neighbors,” says Kim Gregory.
Here at the fall festival it doesn’t matter if you’re buying an item for yourself or friends. In the end you’re giving to a higher cause.
