CALHOUN CITY, Miss. (WCBI Sports) – Calhoun City reloads this season, returning 16 starters from a team that won two playoffs games before losing in the 2A Quarterfinals last season.
Head Coach Perry Liles says he’s confident in his defense and the offense is clicking. The wildcats’ two senior running backs return. Lavarious Varnado and Cartin Mcbride both can run a 4.5 second 40-yard dash.
Liles says it’s a fast squad, and a complicated system.
“I don’t know what (system) we run. We run a lot of formations and a lot of plays. I would hate to defend us,” Liles said. “We run no huddle and we have those fancy wristbands and all that. I don’t understand it myself. They run plays fast and get a lot done. He’s picked up on it well.”
It’s ok, Liles is the defensive coordinator. Quarterback Chakel Gates was second in yards in all of 2A last season.
“The coaching staff, they’re pretty good. They get on us and make us do the right thing,” Gates said.
