CALEDONIA, Miss. (WCBI Sports) – The Caledonia Confederates have a team full of football players, baseball players and track athletes. Some coaches may be bothered by the split focus, but not 18th-year head man Josh Scott.
“In our culture, we want to focus on one thing and studies are showing that’s not the best way,” Scott said. “There’s something to be said for knowing how to win.”
The Confederates have eight seniors. It’s a tightly-knit group.
“We’re a brotherhood,” senior Jonathan Comer said. “We hang out with each other on the weekends. It helps us on the basketball court.”
“Our chemistry, we’ve been playing together since we were 13, 14 years old and the team chemistry has really come together this year,” senior Caleb Brown said.
“We always said, our 12th-grade year, that’s going to be the year that we try to go far,” senior Ben Marchbanks said. He’s the quarterback on the football team.
It’s not all about chemistry, but also the mindset that the team has that Scott believes has brought them here.
“They’ve put themselves in a position to be successful,” Scott said. “They don’t worry about numbers. They’ve truly bought into a team philosophy.”
Exiting in the first round of the playoffs a season ago, the hopes are higher for this year.
“We’ve been working for this our whole life,” Comer said. “We would love to make a big run.”
The team has one month to wait before its postseason journey begins.
