COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) -A Columbus Bank is robbed and one man is in custody.
Just after 2:00p.m. Friday Columbus Police were dispatched to a bank robbery in progress at the Cadence Bank branch, located at 803 Main Street. Witnesses tell police it was a scary situation that left many shaken.
Columbus Police Chief Selvain McQueen says, “A white male entered the bank with a note.”
Investigators say that white male is 56 year old Jackie Jennings. He’d been living at a local Budget Inn for a while. Investigators think Jennings was down on his luck, when he entered the bank. Jennings said he had a bomb and demanded cash.
McQueen says, “The teller gave the perpetrator if you will an undetermined amount of money.”
Investigators say that’s when Jennings tried to make his escape. Several Columbus Police officers were close by and apprehended him in the parking lot next to the ATM. He gave up without a fight.
According to McQueen, “At this time bond and preliminary hearing have not been set but he is in fact in custody.”
No bomb was found and thankfully No-one was hurt. Jennings will spend the weekend in jail and most likely won’t see a judge until Monday.
No word yet on exactly how much money was taken. The investigation remains ongoing.
