STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI Sports) – The Mississippi State football team is getting ready to host LSU Saturday. Senior quarterback Tyler Russell will be back under center, according to Mullen. Russell has missed the past three games after suffering a concussion against Oklahoma State on Aug. 31.
Head coach Dan Mullen believes that even with sophomore Dak Prescott’s impressive play, Russell is still the man for the job.
“Tyler, it’s his personality in meetings and how he handles himself on the field that you love,” Mullen said. “He’s played a lot of football. It’s one thing if he’s only played a couple games. He’s been here for a while. He’s played a lot of football. He’s been in big games. Obviously, I see it very different than if he was an inexperienced quarterback.”
The 6 p.m. kickoff will be the Bulldogs first game in two weeks. The bye week has given State extra time to plan for LSU’s ferocious offense.
“You look at the explosiveness of LSU’s offense, you know, we’re going to have to score some points,” Mullen said. “To do that, we’re going to have to execute at a very high level and make a lot of plays against a talented defense.”
The Tigers’ offense scored 41 points in their loss at #9 Georgia Saturday. But MSU is ranked second in the SEC in yards allowed and says its ready.
“They like to run the ball,” freshman defensive tackle Nelson Adams said. “I wouldn’t say they’re predictable, but they’re going to do what they do.”
“I think we’re good,” junior wide receiver Jameon Lewis said. “We’re 2-2 but the record really doesn’t determine anything. I think we’re going to finish up, have a good week of practice and perform Saturday and take it on to the next week too.”
