Brice’s Crossroads Set To Expand
BALDWYN, Miss. (AP) – The National Park Service has awarded a grant of $34,027 to the state of Mississippi for the purchase of about one acre of land at the Brice’s Crossroads Battlefield.
The funds will go to the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. Mississippi was one of five states receiving grants. National Park Service director Jonathan B. Jarvis announced the grants Monday in a news release.
In the Battle of Brice’s Crossroads, Confederate forces led by Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest defeated a much larger Union force on June 10, 1864. In all, the Union force suffered 2,240 casualties while Confederates lost only 492.
The tactics employed by Forrest to turn back Brig. Gen. Samuel Sturgis’ Union cavalry are still studied by military strategists today.
