TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) – The suspect in Tupelo’s first homicide of the year has his bond set at a quarter of a million dollars.
Twenty seven year old Xzavious Johnson of Okolona made his initial appearance this afternoon at the Lee County Justice Court.
Johnson is charged with murder. Police say Johnson and 22 year old Travonte Young of Tupelo, were arguing in the parking lot of the Barley Courts Apartments Monday evening.
Witnesses say the argument escalated and Johnson shot Young several times. Young was pronounced dead at the hospital and Johnson was arrested after the SWAT team was called to the scene.
“Basically, I think one individual had called the suspect a name and words were exchanged and it went to somebody shooting a gun,” said Detective Paul Hendrix, of the Tupelo Police Department.
Police are still searching for the murder weapon. However, shell casings were found at the scene and ammunition was found in the apartment where Johnson was arrested. Johnson has a prior conviction for burglary and other charges.
