Board of Supervisors eases restrictions on Lowndes County Port
LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – The Lowndes County Port will have more leeway in making business decisions. The Board of Supervisors is easing restrictions on how the port handles day-to-day business.
Previously, the Board of Supervisors had to approve various moves made at the port, including many purchases for things like supplies and equipment.
Supervisors have dropped many of those, leaving them to the discretion of the Port Authority.
Supervisors will still have to approve any conveyance of property or easements.
Since Steel Dynamics recently decided not to exercise an option to buy land at the port, the county, the LINK, the Port Authority, and the Industrial Development Authority are searching out new opportunities for the area.
“We think we’ve got some good options there that we will come out with in the future, and we’re all very excited about the future of the port,” said LCBS President Trip Hairston.
The Lowndes County Port operates two barge terminals on the east and west banks of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway.
