PICKENS COUNTY, Ala. (WCBI) — A 19-year-old man and a 14-year-old passenger are in jail after leading deputies in two counties on a wild chase.
Lowndes investigators say Jerry Austin Crowell of Gordo was caught in rural west Pickens County at about 4:30 p.m. after a three-hour manhunt Monday afternoon. He’d wrecked a car reported stolen in Gordo after fleeing Lowndes County sheriff’s deputies Marc McGarrity and Randy Collins.
The 14-year-old was caught at the scene on Eagle Road west of Ethelsville in the Forrest community, but Crowell fled on foot before being tracked by K9 units from Lowndes and Pickens counties and helicopters.
The initial chase started on Military Road on the northern edge of Columbus when McGarrity spotted the car which had been reported stolen in Gordo. When he and Collins attempted to stop the vehicle, it took off, leading a chase along Military Road to 14th Avenue North and Waterworks through the heart of north Columbus, to Highway 182, Bersheba and Bert Rickman roads to Old Yorkville Road and into West Alabama where he finally crashed.
Investigators say the two admitted stealing the car and stealing a TV from a car in Tuscaloosa
Crowell was arrested last year in Pickens County on burglary and theft charges and both are on probation for previous convictions.
