TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – For several hours Thanksgiving morning, more than a hundred people gathered at Harrisburg Baptist Church to prepare and pack plate lunches then deliver them to area jails, shut ins, the ICU waiting room, and other needy people across the region.
For some, this outreach has become a Thanksgiving Day tradition and a tangible way to live out their Christian faith.
“It’s better to give than to receive and it’s such a great joy to be able to give to those less fortunate,” Volunteer Janice Scott said.
“Before we gather with our family, before we eat , before we do any celebrating ourselves and give thanks we just like to come early this morning, get out of bed, serve others and just kind of put our faith in action,” Laurie Bishop said.
This Thanksgiving feeding has been taking place more than twenty years, organizers say along with putting hands and feet to the gospel, it also brings churches together across racial and denominational lines.
“That’s what God is all about, He’s diverse, He’s not caught up in what our denominational name is , He’s more concerned about do we have a relationship with Him and so because we have a relationship with Christ, all of us can come together and work for one common goal,” said Bishop Clarence Parks, who began the feeding 24 years ago.
It’s a message volunteers of all ages understand.
“It warms my heart knowing we have helped someone a little unfortunate than we are, we are truly blessed people,” said Cheryl Eames.
