LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — The cloudy weather didn’t stop hundreds of people from participating in the “Walk to End Alzheimer’s Disease” Sunday afternoon. The event was held at East Mississippi College Golden Triangle.

The Alzheimer’s Association annual Walk is the largest event in the nation held to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s support and research. Alzheimer’s Disease is a common form of dementia or memory loss.

“Alzheimer’s is the 6th leading cause of death and there is no cure. There’s no way to slow it down,” says Rachel Ruello, with the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s Disease.

Hundreds of supporters turned out for the scenic 3-mile walk around EMCC’s campus. Some of the walkers say their lives have been personally impacted by Alzheimer’s disease.

“My mom died in February of this year of Alzheimer’s. She had it for about eight years. I’m just out here to help create an awareness for the Alzheimer’s Disease and to raise money for research and development so that we can find a cure for it,” says Brenda Johnson, who walked and raised funds during the event.

Columbus Mayor Robert Smith and Starkville Mayor Parker Wiseman both came out to show their support. Registration was free and the event also included entertainment and an opening ceremony.
