ITAWAMBA COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) For nearly four decades, the Salvation Army has collected gifts for underprivileged children through the Angel Tree Program. The deadline to sponsor a child is quickly approaching, but the Salvation Army’s mission is still not complete.
Its always better to give than receive. Volunteers with the Salvation Army dedicate the holiday season to helping families in need. Now, they are making a last minute push to make sure all of the area’s angels, young and old, have presents under the tree.
“Most of us have children and so we know what it means to that child on Christmas morning to think that Santa came to visit. A majority of these children- our angel tree children- will only get what our adopted families are getting them for Christmas,” said Michelle Miles, Service Center Manager.
That’s why The Salvation Army is asking gracious givers to meet their angel’s basic needs first. A warm coat, and a pair of shoes are always good gift ideas. You can also donate money to their cause…
“We have people every day calling in for assistance, they need their electric bills paid, they need gas for heat. They more money we raise the more we can help,” said store clerk Barbara Lann.
In Fulton, some of the most seasoned residents are also available for adoption. Over 10 senior citizens are still waiting to be sponsored.
“A lot of times during Christmas we get caught up with children and we tend to forget that we have a lot of elderly that are in need also,” said Miles.
Golden Angels can be found at the Bancorp South Branch in Fulton.
The deadline to bring gifts for Angel Tree participants is December 17th.
