Video: Amory Police Warn Of IRS Scam
AMORY, Miss. (WCBI) – It’s an old scam that continues to get new victims.
Scammers call victims claiming to work for the IRS, saying you owe money, and threaten people with a lawsuit.
Amory Police Chief Ronnie Bowen says the phone number will appear to be local on caller ID but it’s actually from overseas.
Victims usually send money through a payment card.
Bowen is warning residents not to fall for the scam.
“First of all, the Internal Revenue Service will not contact you by phone. They will send letters and also make personal visits to you. You won’t have to worry about them calling you on the phone saying you are being sued or whatever. They really have a way to get your attention, by calling you on the phone. The Internal Revenue Service doesn’t operate that way,” said Bowen.
Five incidents were reported to Amory police last week.
