Amory celebrates MLK Day with message of unity

AMORY, Miss. (WCBI) – Amory celebrated MLK Day a day early.

But it was a bit more than a celebration.

A motorcade started at West Amory Elementary and ended at Carter’s Chapel Church of the Living God.

The program featured speakers and musicians from churches across Monroe County.

Lois Darden said she’s helped organize the event, and this year’s message of unity is especially timely.

“We have come a little ways, but not a long ways,” said Darden. “We need to be nice to everyone, we need to show respect, and we need to love everyone.”

President Ronald Reagan signed the MLK holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed three years later.
