AMORY, Miss. (WCBI)-Students of East Amory Elementary School graduated Friday from the D.A.R.E. Drug Prevention Program.
For the last 10 weeks, 146 5th Graders have been learning about the harmful effects of drugs and alcohol abuse from the Amory Police Department. Officers teach the students how to stand up to peer pressure, make positive choices, and avoid situations with drugs and alcohol. Some of the students say, the what they learned in the classroom will help them to remember to stay healthy.
“We got to look at lungs on the projector of what it does to you what smoke does to you, to your lungs,” says Karlee Honeycutt.
” So they can learn to make good decisions when they get older they can use it,” says Jimmy Gutierrez.
” It teaches kids to stay away from drugs and not to face hard fears,” says Connor Stevens.
The D.A.R.E. Program has been taught in the Amory city schools since 1993 and is now in more than 300,000 classrooms nationwide.
