Alabama Senate Winner Doug Jones
ALABAMA, (WCBI)- After months of contentious campaigning and weeks of national attention and accusations, we now know who will fill Jeff Sessions seat in the U.S. Senate.
And for the first time in 20 years it will be a Democrat.
In what turned out to be an extremely close race it appears that Doug Jones has defeated former State Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore.
The margin of victory appears to be just over 10 thousand votes.
Moore’s campaign has been dogged in recent weeks by highly publicized reports of sexual misconduct with teenage girls, one as young as 14, nearly 40 years ago.
He had also been denounced by sitting Senators on both sides of the aisle, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a fellow Republican, and even fellow Alabamian Richard Shelby.
