STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI Sports) – Senior quarterback Dak Prescott showed why he’s the leader of the offense as the passing game dominated Mississippi State’s Spring Game Saturday.
Prescott finished 20-of-29 for 231 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions, adding 25 yards rushing.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Nick Fitzgerald threw for 255 yards and accounted for three touchdowns to lead the White team to a 28-24 win over the Maroon squad.
The men’s and women’s basketball coaches led the two sides, Ben Howland winning with White while Vic Schaefer coached Maroon. A crowd of 21,500 turned out to see the scrimmage.
“I think we had a great crowd here today,” said head coach Dan Mullen. “That is what is so important to us, putting players in a game situation and seeing how they handle it. This is a different type of pressure, and it is good to have those guys experience that.”
Prescott played the entire first half for the Maroon team.
“Everything was good overall, and I feel like everyone got better,” said Prescott. “I led the other guys, but I also made sure they led. I really feel like we are in the right position we need to be in at this point.”
Redshirt freshman Dontavian Lee led all running backs with 53 yards on 11 carries and a touchdown. Junior De’Runnya Wilson paced all receivers with 92 yards on five catches.
Sophomore J.T. Gray led all tacklers with nine, while Kivon Coman tallied eight.
“The biggest thing to me is that no one put themselves out of position,” said Mullen. “No one has earned a spot yet, but we have a long training camp to go where guys can continue to learn and improve. I think we are a young unit, and I think the guys have the intensity and the work ethic they need to be successful.”
