Aberdeen Hosting Weekend Mardi Gras Celebration
ABERDEEN, MISS. (WCBI) – A Monroe County town is letting the good times roll.
Aberdeen is hosting its Mardi Gras celebration this weekend. Merchants are excited and proceeds from festivities benefit two great causes.
Kim Taylor has been busy decorating her coffee shop and cafe for Mardi Gras.
“It gives us something to look forward to, ” Taylor said.
Taylor is co-owner of “The Coffee Mug” She believes the Mardi Gras celebration will bring new customers to her business and others.
“It helps people to know I’m here, and not just me but other local business owners, so what they do for the town is also helping local businesses,” Taylor said.
There is even a Mardi Gras store, where revelers can buy beads, masks, and other Mardi Gras items. This space will soon become a store called “Nostalgia”, a New Orleans themed store, with a florist in the back. Neil Palmer is organizing the celebrations, which also include food, entertainment, and a Mardi Gras cruise Saturday afternoon.
Palmer also decorated his house for the celebration and says Mardi Gras is a family event.
“Everybody comes out and comes together to celebrate, just having fun and being together, and this is what we need here, at this time, this is what we need right now,” said Neil Palmer, who organized the celebration.
Proceeds from food sales go to the Aberdeen Animal Shelter and Save Aberdeen Landmarks. Ann Tackett is the director of Aberdeen Main Street and says the Mardi Gras celebrations will also be an opportunity to showcase downtown development.
” The only buildings that are available are under construction, we are really full, that helps our town so much, we have a lot of pride in what we’ve done,” Tackett said.
The food, fun, and festivities take place in the downtown area, and there will also be plenty of King Cake for sale.
There will be food and entertainment at the Main Street Depot Friday and Saturday evening. The car parade takes place at 2 pm Saturday. For more information, go to the Facebook page for Aberdeen Main Street.
