Abandoned school gym catches fire; Investigation continues

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – An abandoned school gym was damaged by a suspicious fire in Columbus.

The fire happened at about 10 a.m. at the old Immanuel School gym building behind Cookout.

Fire Chief Duane Hughes said the building had major smoke and water damage.

No one was inside at the time of the blaze.

However, Hughes said there was evidence squatters were living inside the empty building.

There was also no power to the old gym.

Columbus Fire and Rescue, along with the State Fire Marshal, were investigating what sparked the fire.
