Retirement Directors Gather To Share Ideas

TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) –  A group of professionals who try to attract retirees to their cities shared ideas and strategies with each other during a meeting in Tupelo.

The quarterly meeting of “retirement directors” took place in Tupelo.

It started Thursday in Aberdeen, then the group drove to Tupelo where they toured attractions such as the downtown area, NMMC and the Elvis Birthplace.

During a working lunch at city hall, the group heard from an official with the Mississippi Development Authority who talked about the importance of cities attracting retirees to their area.

“It’s a good place because it does bring money into the city, lots of money, retirees don’t bring crime, they don’t bring problems, they come and buy a house, usually they buy a car because the city they came from usually has public transportation and eventually we will get there but that’s why it’s a good thing to have people here who add to the assets of our community,” said Ora Baldwin, retirement director for the City of Tupelo.

Cities such as Oxford, Aberdeen, Clinton, Natchez, Picayune, Madison and Jackson were represented at the Tupelo meeting.
