Students at Shannon High School look at career options

SHANNON, MISS. (WCBI) – Students at Shannon High School had the chance to see what jobs are available at a variety of businesses and career fields.

Shannon High School held its first “Job Fair.”  More than 20 businesses, including construction, automotive, military and law enforcement set up booths in the gym.

Company representatives were taking students’ resumes and in some cases, hiring for summer work or internships.

Teachers and students said the job fair benefits everyone.

“We have even had people, companies, reach out to us about coming up here, because they want high schoolers, they want them right out of high school so they can train them their way and have someone working for them, 20 to 30 years down the line,” said career coach Dee Coleman.

“It is very important to think about your future because everything you do right now, at this day and age, it dictates you for the rest of your life so it is very important for you to understand what you want to do,” said senior at Shannon High School Khaled Trice.

“If they’re not going to pursue a career or something further along in education I try and tell them about the things they can do without going to school and all of the opportunities that construction can offer them,” said Brittany Sanders, with Century Construction.

“We would love to hire some younger people just entering the workforce, teach them the HomeStretch way of doing things, we are looking for people of good character, willing to be trained,” said Jon Stembridge, with Homestretch Furniture.
