Senate Bill Could Speed Up Leisure and Recreation Districts

JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) -A bill headed for the Governor’s Desk would make it easier for cities and counties to establish leisure and recreation districts.

Senate Bill 2588 passed the House Wednesday by a wide margin.

The measure is an expansion of the so-called “Go Cup” law which allows customers in certain set aside entertainment districts to leave a restaurant or bar with open containers of alcohol.

In the original law, local governments had to draw up their plan, pass an ordinance, and submit it to the legislature for approval, before the ordinance could take effect.

SB 2588 does away with the need for legislative approval, leaving the entire matter under local government control.

The bill heads to Governor Bryant for his signature.
