CALHOUN COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – An Oakland man is being held in the Calhoun County Jail after assaulting a Grenada man during a session of Calhoun County Justice Court last week.
Gilbert Files, 47, is currently charged with contempt of court and simple assault.
Sheriff Greg Pollan said Files was in court with his sister, Beverly Browning of Big Creek, who was seeking a restraining order against her husband Morris Ray Browning.
Pollan said as Morris Ray Browning was walking through the swinging doors into the audience portion of the courtroom, he was assaulted by Files. Browning reportedly suffered a black-eye and “busted lip.”
Files was sentenced to 30 days in jail for the contempt charge by Judge Jim Vance. Files is scheduled to return to court this week for a possible upgrade to the assault charge per state law regarding any assault occurring inside a courtroom.
