Video: Oxford HS Sophomore Named ‘Youth Of The Year’
TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) – A sophomore at Oxford High School has been named “Youth of the Year” for the Boys and Girls Clubs of North Mississippi.
Jayla Price won the honor this evening during the annual competition. She competed against representatives from the two Tupelo clubs, along with New Albany and Ripley.
Jayla has attended the Oxford Boys and Girls Club for about four years, and she says it has helped her with her school work, along with her confidence and goal setting.
“It has helped me grow, as a person, grow communication skills and leadership skills and I really like going to the club because it’s really fun,” Price said.
“I was very confident seeing these kids, they make me feel like I was back up there again when I was behind the podium and it’s great to see this generation come up and see them command the room like they did at such a young age, because I know I couldn’t do that at such a young age,” said Laierrick McGaha, who served as a judge and is a former “Youth of the Year.”
Jayla will now prepare for the state Boys and Girls Club competition next month in Jackson. More than 500 young people are served each day through the five North Mississippi clubs.
