Macon Police Department Is Asking For Public’s Help To Crack A Cold Case
MACON, Miss. (WCBI)- A Macon hit and run case remains unsolved.
Nearly two years later, the Macon Police Department is still trying to find the person responsible for killing Barcus Evans back in August of 2016.
“A passerby saw a body laying on the side of the road and notified 911, so we went up there to investigate, said Interim Police Chief Davine Beck. “It appeared that this young man was hit by vehicle.”
An autopsy report shows the 31-year-old died of multiple blunt force trauma.
Beck was the assistant police chief at the Macon Police Department during the time of the incident.
He said Evans was from Starkville but was no stranger to Macon.
“He was dating a young lady in this area and he was living with her,” Beck recalled. “I saw Evans at one time quite a few times around the area just passing by, just a mild and mannered young man.”
Roughly 20 months later, investigators are still having a hard time tracking down leads to crack the case.
“They sent an investigator down here to help with some of the witnesses that we have, and to try to match up vehicles that possibly hit him,” Beck explained. “Evidence that was left at the scene that we sent to the state crime lab, it was just inconclusive, it didn’t match up, it just didn’t seem right.”
When the tragic accident first happened, investigators ran into not having enough evidence to lead to an arrest.
Now, nearly two years later, investigators said they’re having trouble getting witnesses to come forward and help them with this investigation.
“When you don’t have a witness and you’re dealing with circumstantial evidence, you’re dealing with hearsay, Beck expressed. “You just got to keep on knocking down leads until you get the right lead, and hopefully the right person can come up with some type of evidence to kind of fill in the puzzle of the evidence that we already got.”
Despite the days and weeks continuing to roll on, the interim police chief said his department is determined to solve this cold case and help give Evans’ family the justice they’ve been longing for.
“If anybody has any new information or wants to come forward to help us, we will be glad to take that information and continue to investigate this case,” said Beck.
The Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Department and District Attorney’s office is assisting the Macon Police Department in this investigation.
If anyone has any information on this case, you’re asked to contact the Macon Police Department or Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers.
