VIDEO: Battling The Blaze
STARKVILLE, Miss.(WCBI) – No one was killed in last night’s fire, but it was a life changing event for the, more than 20 people displaced by the blaze.
“The stair case collapsed so there was no way out the door,”said Avalon Apartment Resident Glendaceia Holly.
Tense moments, Thursday night as Glendaceia Holly and her boyfriend barely escaped the burning building.
“I was just thinking that we were about to die and he just kept telling me, keep calm we’re going to get out. I’m going to get us out of here,”said Holly.
The couple was sleeping when residents were running through the building knocking on doors to warn others.
“People from the side where the fire started came outside and they were freaking out. They were going up to the 3rd floor, that was already completely on fire, banging on people’s doors trying to get people out,”said Avalon Apartment Resident Emilee Fried.
Holley says once she realized the building was engulfed, they made their way to the door.
“There were flames everywhere . When we were trying to grab a jacket and shoes. The stair case had already collapse. We couldn’t go out the door. The firemen, we had to yell for them because they thought they had everyone out the building but they didn’t. We were still in side, we were the only 2 still left. He actually told us we only had one option and that was to jump from the second floor. While we were getting ready to jump across the balcony, her balcony above me was already coming down a little bit. We just had to jump. I jumped first and my boyfriend actually fell into the bushes. I wasn’t lucky to fall into the bushes, I actually fell on the balcony of my neighbor below me,”said Holly.
Crossgate, the apartment across from Avalon will host a donation drive Saturday from 7AM to 1PM.
