Video: Sheriff’s Office opens internal investigation after jail escape

LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI)- A man police believe is behind a string of robberies busts out of jail. An internal investigation is now happening at the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Department.

Law enforcement say 29 year old, Delvin Moore escaped the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center around 9 p.m. Saturday. This is the first time in a decade, Lowndes County Sheriff Mike Arledge says, they’ve had anyone escape the jail.

Moore was arrested Friday by Columbus Police after a robbery at the Sprint Mart on Highway 69.

Police found a handgun and cash after being called to crash on Pickensville road, where they arrested Moore. Sheriff Arledge says his department is conducting an internal investigation with the hopes this doesn’t happen again.

“We found out he manipulated the lock of the cell by putting an object inside it, and when the jailer shut the door it didn’t actually lock. We are looking into jailer error or lack of protocol,” said Sheriff Arledge.

Moore was last seen wearing a maroon shirt, white pants and black shoes. Anyone with information should the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office or Columbus Police.
