VIDEO: One Local Company Is On A Mission To Give Back And Help The Victims In Texas Who Were Impacted By Hurricane Harvey
STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI)- Hurricane Harvey’s destruction is prompting people from all across the country to lend a helping hand, including people here in Mississippi.
Several groups in our area are organizing efforts to send volunteers and relief supplies.
One of those groups is Southwire. They’re holding a supply drive outside of the Walmart in Starkville collecting donations.
“Southwire is a family company and we always believe in giving back to the community, any community that we are in and involved with, so this is our way of giving back to our community as well as the community in Texas,” said Josh Painter, who works at Southwire, and is also volunteering at the donation drive.
“It makes me feel proud to be a part of the company just to do stuff like this, just to help other people,” said Larry Moore, who works at Southwire and also volunteers at the donation drive.
Volunteers understand the importance of giving back and helping those who lost everything in the deadly storm.
During the first day of the donation drive, volunteers nearly filled up their truck with donated items, but they still need more.
“We’re looking for canned goods, diapers, clothing, coolers, anything that someone might need that’s going through this, and one of the big things in the water,” said Painter.
While its good for people to make donations, it’s also just as important for them to make sure they know where their donations are going.
On Wednesday, the Mississippi Secretary of State’s Office posted helpful tips for those who are wanting to donate.
The website also posted a full list of all of the registered charities in the state to help donors avoid being scammed.
“I think it’s very important and with Southwire we have a track record, we do these types of things often, we do them every year,” said Painter. “Just about every year we’re doing something like this and we’re making sure it’s going to the right place.”
“The stuff that we collect we have a driver coming from our company and is taking it straight to Texas so we know it’s going to the people that need it,” said Moore.
Southwire will continue to accept donations for the remainder of the week.
On Thursday, they’ll be outside of Walmart from 7 A.M. to 7 P.M., and on Friday from 7 A.M. to 5 P.M.
Their truck will leave to drop off the donations in Texas on Friday.
