Video: Hollenhead, Brown Sign With North Alabama
FULTON, MS (ICC Athletics) – Itawamba Community College sophomore All-American infielders Mamie Hollenhead and Alex Brown have signed to continue their careers at the University of North Alabama next season.
Hollenhead (Mathiston) earned back-to-back National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) JUCO All-American honors and was named to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II Second Team All-American team this past season.
The East Webster graduate led the team with a .469 batting average and had a team-high in hits (90) and RBIs (71) in 192 at-bats. She added 25 doubles, six triple, two home runs, four walks and 16 stolen bases. Hollenhead had a .480 on-base percentage and a .693 slugging percentage to go along with a .971 fielding percentage with 65 putouts, 104 assists, nine double play and only five errors in 174 total chances as a third baseman.
Brown (Pontotoc) earned her second-straight NFCA JUCO All-American honor when she was named to the Second Team earlier this month and was named Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colelges (MACJC) Co-Player of the Year.
The Pontotoc alumna hit .440 in her final season with the Indians with 70 hits, 69 runs, 44 RBI, 15 walks, and a team-high six home runs in 159 at-bats. She also led the team in stolen bases (29) and hit by pitch (24), which led the country for a second-straight season. Brown had a .542 on-base percentage and a team-best .730 slugging percentage to go along with a .982 fielding percentage with 117 putouts, 105 assists, 18 doubles plays and only four errors in 226 total chances at second base.
The duo were selected to the NJCAA All-Region 23, MACJC All-State, and NFCA All-South teams in both their freshman and sophomore seasons at ICC.
UNA is currently a member of the Gulf South Conference but will step up to the Division I level of play when they join the Atlantic Sun Conference in the 2018-19 academic year. Last season, UNA advanced to the NCAA South 2 Region Championship. In 2016, the Lions defeated Humboldt State to win the NJCAA Division II National Championship.
Hollenhead and Brown join fellow sophomore Carleigh Mills (Kossuth) on signing to continue their careers next season. Mill, a right-handed pitcher, signed with the University of West Alabama earlier this month.
