What We Know: The Latest On The High-Speed Chase That Led To Gunfire
WEBSTER CO./LOWNDES CO., Miss. (WCBI) – Here’s what we know so far from Mississippi Bureau of Investigation spokesman Warren Strain about the high-speed chase that led multiple law enforcement agencies through several counties and ended in gunfire four miles from the Alabama state line:
- At 10:07 am, law enforcement in Webster County attempted to stop a white Hyundai for suspicion of DUI
- The suspect refused to stop and fled through three counties, hitting speeds at well over 100 MPH
- At 10:17 am, Columbus Police deployed stop strips; the suspect evaded those
- At 10:29 am, a Lowndes County deputy deployed stop strips near the Highway 50 exit ramp on Highway 82
- The Hyundai struck those stop strips, and came to a stop around three miles further down, near a bridge on Mill Road
- The suspect then exited the vehicle, and exchanged gunfire with law enforcement
- Lowndes County deputy Kevin Forrester was struck by one of the suspect’s bullets in the leg (he was taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital in Columbus, Miss. for treatment)
- The suspect was killed during the exchange of gunfire with law enforcement
- More than one weapon was found in or near the suspect’s vehicle
- The suspect is a 45-year-old white male; sources say he is from Starkville
