Video: Lee County Couple Caught Conspiring to Conceal Contraband

TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) –A Nettleton woman is accused of using the Good Book to smuggle drugs into the Lee County Jail.

Lee County Sheriff Jim Johnson says Courtney Ford brought a Bible to the jail for Stephen Jason Estes, of Plantersville.

Estes was in the Jail, about to be turned over to MDOC for a drug related crime.

Johnson says an officer searched the Bible, which is standard practice, with anything left for an inmate. The sheriff says it appeared part of the binding was cut away, and meth was found inside.

The sheriff says both Estes and Ford plotted to get the items inside the jail.

“We continuously search property that comes in, letters, that come in, letters that go, out, it’s amazing, to the general public of what you can find. They used the Bible, thinking it would be an easier way to ship it in and wouldn’t be checked. Our officers did a good job, once they got it, did what they were supposed to and was able to uncover this, it could have very easily been a weapon.”

Ford’s bond was set at $75,000.00. She was out on a previous bond for possession of a controlled substance. Estes’ bond was set at $30,000.00.
