Video: A Fight Caught On Video Leads To Reviewing Security Procedures
NOXUBEE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – A fight caught on video is raising questions about security procedures at area schools.
20-year old Edrieon Rice is charged, after allegedly barging into the halls and attacking a Noxubee County High student.
The altercation happened on Wednesday, when Rice was leaving the school after signing out a sibling.
He started a fight with the student in the foyer, during the middle of students switching classes.
Noxubee County High School Principal James Covington says the school has certain visitor policies, and now, the school and administration will review the incident and take any needed measures.
The sheriff’s department says Rice, in the white shirt, found his intended target and started the altercation.
Montrell Rucker is a parent of a Noxubee County High School senior and is shocked by what’s seen in the video.
“After watching this video, it troubles me to see this type of activity unraveling in our school district. I’m just grateful that this young man didn’t have a weapon because there could have been a lot of fatalities there. I think that we need to take measures to revise our security.”
Covington says the school has three security guards and these guidelines for all visitors.
“Upon entering campus, they’re directed to the security’s desk so they can sign in, they’re purpose for being here, and then they are escorted, or they’re directed to go to the office, and then we will find out they’re actual business in the office.”
Covington says Rice followed all of those steps and that the fight goes to show that you never know someone’s intentions.
“Things happen out there in the community and they have a way of wanting to kind of finish here, at school. It’s not school related, but it becomes school related in a sense, because they’re our students, and you know, off campus activities sometimes have a way to trickle back into the school.”
The principal says the school is going to learn from the incident and review the school’s current procedures, ranging from visitor policies, to who can be authorized to sign out students.
“We’re going to sit down with the superintendent, the central office people that need to be involved, and dialogue to see if we need to change something here, as to how we allow students, or not, yes students, I guess to leave our campus and who can pick them up.”
Rucker says this measure could possibly prevent situations like this from happening again.
“Those students that are being picked up, if they would have like a waiting area and when that individual comes, they don’t have access to the building, and the students that they are there to pick up could possibly be released by a security officer, or something like that.”
The incident is still under investigation, and Covington wants to assure parents that campus is a safe place.
Rice is currently charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct by fighting.
