Video: Columbus Council Approves Reward Money for Information on Major Crimes

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) -There have been 9 homicides so far this year in Columbus. Four of those  remain unsolved.

Getting people to come forward with information has been a big problem, but now there could be a solution…

Tuesday night,  Columbus Councilmen voted unanimously to approve a reward program proposed by Mayor Robert Smith..

The program allows anyone with information linked to a crime in the city to call in anonymously.

If the information leads to an arrest and conviction that person could be in line for a reward.  In a homicide case the reward is $15,000.00.  For armed robbery cases the reward is $5,000.00.

The money will come from the city’s budget.

Police Chief Oscar Lewis and the council believe this program will help cut down on crime in the city.
