Person Of Interest Being Questioned In Death Of Mayor’s Son

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI-TV) – There are new developments in the investigation into the shooting death of Columbus Mayor Robert Smith’s son. A source close to the investigation tells WCBI a person of interest is being questioned Thursday night in the case.

A preliminary autopsy Thursday confirmed he died Wednesday from a gunshot wound. He was shot at least once at his house in east Columbus’ Temple Cove.

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI-TV) – An autopsy is underway at the state crime lab on the body of Columbus Mayor Robert Smith’s son.

Robert Smith Jr. was shot at his Temple Cove home Wednesday afternoon. He died at Baptist Golden Triangle a short time later.

Multiple sources tell WCBI the shooting is believed to be a domestic situation, involving the younger Smith’s family.

Columbus police say the shooting remains under investigation but have not released any other details. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is also assisting. Evidence has been taken to the state crime lab.

Preliminary autopsy results could be complete as early as Thursday afternoon.
