Video: Flag Controversy Still Flying in Tupelo
TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) –The debate over the Mississippi flag and its place in front of a soon to be finished police station may not be over.
At a recent meeting, the Tupelo City Council passed an ordinance saying that any city property with two or more flag poles must fly the state flag on one of them. Tupelo’s new police station has 3 poles, meaning the state flag must be on display.
Councilwoman Nettie Davis represents the majority African – American ward where the new station is located. Davis says she is considering asking the council to have two of the flag poles removed from the station, so the state flag doesn’t have to fly. She adds it’s an insult to have a flag bearing a Confederate symbol forced upon her ward when its offensive to many of her constituents.
“The flag in our opinion, which, that is a lot of people, does not have a good representation for our state or our city. The things you think it about as it relates to is hate; it relates to slavery.”
The council is also considering drafting a resolution asking the state legislature to redesign the current Mississippi flag.
Both measures were originally on Tuesday’s council agenda, but have been moved to the study agenda, meaning no official action can be taken on them Tuesday night.
