Southern Amateur Championship Begins Today at Old Waverly
WEST POINT, Miss. (WCBI/Old Waverly GC) – The 109th Southern Amateur Golf Championship, presented by Duck Head attire, is set to be contested next week, July 15-18, at prestigious Old Waverly Club. The tournament, ranked among the top 5 US amateur events by the Royal & Ancient, will include top amateurs from 20 states and 21 players from seven foreign countries.
Recently crowned NCAA champion Bryson DeChambeau, an SMU junior from California, heads the field of 168 players, that was culled down out of 610 overall entrants. DeChambeau, No. 2 in Scratch Players World Rankings is joined by seven others high in the rankings including Texas phenom Scottie Scheffler who won the SGA National Am of the Month in April. Mississippi boasts ten players in the starting field with more likely to be added Monday in the last of 19 regional qualifiers at Old Waverly.
The tournament, run by the 113-year-old Southern Golf Association, is played annually at esteemed courses that have included the likes of Colonial (Memphis), Pinehurst, Sea Island, Bay Hill, East Lake, Lake Nona, Atlanta Athletic Club, The Honors Course, Dunes Club, The Homestead and Shoal Creek.
This is the first time for the Southern Amateur at Old Waverly, which has hosted the Southern Junior, the U.S. Women’s Open and other notable competitions.
