COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — A Columbus police officer has her suspension reduced.
The City Council Tuesday night cut Officer Rebecca Lomax’s suspension from 23 days to 15 days. Police Chief Selvain McQueen did not recommend the change but concurred with the council’s decision.
McQueen originally sought the stiffer penalty last month after Lomax had an accident which resulted in damage to her patrol car. It was her fourth accident in less than three years on the force.
The council reduced the punishment after a further review of the evidence and statements from some other officers. Lomax has disputed she was responsible for the damage in the accidents but says since the council reduced the penalty, she likely won’t appeal to the Civil Service Commission because of the narrow rules under which the commission can consider overturning disciplinary actions.
